Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity

Dear Friends,

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.”

These are the words the priest begins in prayer at every Mass. They are words first spoken by St. Paul as he concluded his letter to the Corinthians and summarize today’s Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity.

Today, however, we do not praise God for a particular mystery or event. We praise God simply for who he is: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God is Love — and love does not remain alone. That is a staggering truth. Jesus reveals that the great design of God’s love is this: the three Divine Persons desire to make their home within us, drawing us by grace into their own inner life and communion, so that we may find our true home in them.

This is the very purpose for which we were created. We traditionally call this profound gift the indwelling of the Trinity through the Holy Spirit—the Love of God poured into our hearts. Jesus reassured his disciples before his death, that God’s love and saving presence dwells within each of us and among all of us, in every circumstance of our lives. This indwelling presence abides in our deepest center, “closer to us than we are to ourselves,” inviting us to discover eternal life by sharing in God’s own divine life.

When we fail to recognize this indwelling presence deep within us, both the first reading and the Catechism remind us how to return to it. The Church teaches that to pray the holy name “Jesus” is to invoke him and to call him within us. His name is the only one that contains the presence it signifies — the one name that contains everything (CCC 2666). And each time we make the Sign of the Cross, we seal ourselves once more in that Name, placing ourselves again under the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit.
