A Newman Legacy: The Sommer Family

Homecoming weekend was extra exciting this year! Not only did we have the joy of welcoming so many alumni and friends back to the Newman Center, but we also unveiled our brand new Newman Legacy Wall! This wall has been a long time in the making, and will now serve as a glowing testament to the stories, supporters, and history that make our parish & Newman center such a thriving hub of faith and friendship.

It was an honor to celebrate a special family and their "Newman Story" and legacy. Members of the Sommer family came together to honor and remember four generations of family members who attended Penn and the Newman Center.

George Sommer was present in 1893 at the founding of the Newman Club at Penn, the first Newman club in the country. His son, George Jr., also was actively involved in the Newman Center in the 1920's. And George Jr.'s sons George III and John attended Mass at the Newman Center on Spruce Street in the 1960's. John's son, Nicholas Sommer, attended Mass at Newman in the early 2000's.

One family, four generations of Catholic life at Newman.

We know that there are so many Newman Stories out there. We're beginning a new initiative to gather and share "Newman Stories." If you have one of your own, please consider sharing it with us!
