Sixth Sunday of Easter

Dear Friends,

This Sunday we continue with the beautiful 15 th chapter of John’s Gospel. Last week we reflected on

Jesus’ invitation to remain in Him as He remains in us – an invitation that expresses our Lord’s

desire for intimate communion with each one of us, as well as the human heart’s absolute

dependence on that communion. This week we hear Jesus tell his disciples, “As the Father loves me,

so I love you. Remain in my love.” The communion that the human heart is made for is a

communion of divine Love. We are made to participate in the life of God: to be loved personally by

Him and to love as He loves…in that order!

One of my favorite saints, St. Elizabeth of the Trinity, reflects on the primacy of God’s love in a

letter she wrote to one of her Carmelite sisters: “Listen to what He tells you: LET yourself be loved

more than these! That is, without fearing that any obstacle will be a hindrance to it, for I am free to

pour out My Love on whom I wish! ‘LET yourself be loved more than these’ is your vocation. It is

in being faithful to it that you will make Me happy, for you will magnify the power of my love’.”

Every moment of every day is an opportunity to be loved by God. Do we wake up expecting to

experience the love of God in even the most mundane or challenging parts of our days? Do we live

each day in friendship with Christ and with childlike trust in our Father and His plan for our life?

None of us live this way perfectly all the time! It is the journey of the Christian life to trust and abide

in His love rather than the false or incomplete loves the world offers us. So let us run to the

sacraments and to prayer, asking in humility for our Savior to help us trust Him and His personal

love for us, that we may little by little magnify His love to others.
