Newman Apostolate

    Explanation of the Newman shield

The Newman Apostolate provides pastoral care for the students, faculty, administration and staff of universities and colleges.  St. Agatha - St. James Parish, whose members come primarily from Drexel, Penn, and USP, is blessed with strong and historic ties to Newman. (The Penn Newman Center holds the distinction of being the first Newman Center founded in this country.)  Student parishioners are an integral part of St. Agatha - St. James.  While most are "passing through" and are only with us seasonally during the period when they are pursuing their academic studies, membership in one of the Newman Centers endows them with all the sacramental rights and privileges of permanent, full-time parishioners.  Students participate in all aspects of parish life, from liturgical ministries, to community outreach, to leadership roles with the opportunity to shape the long-term direction of St. Agatha - St. James and the Catholic Church at large.

In addition to opportunities offered to the entire parish, university students and other affiliates are encouraged to register with their respective Newman Clubs (Penn Newman, Drexel Newman, USP Newman) to be informed of activities and services specific to their university.
